Green sea turtle stops to get a clean from a shoal of fish

This is the spectacular moment a turtle stops to get a clean from a shoal of fish in an underwater 'car wash'.

The Hawaiian green sea turtle floated in mid water while the almost luminous yellow tang fish busied themselves with the task of removing the algae from his body.

In a similar scenario to a normal car wash, the turtles take it in turns to swim into this make-shift 'cleaning station' for their daily wash.

Photographer Mike Roberts, 60, snapped the incredible picture while diving at Puako in Hawaii.

He said: 'The turtle is visiting a cleaning station of yellow tangs.

'This is a very common occurrence - the tangs hang out in the same area everyday and the turtles take turns floating mid water allowing the fish to work on all areas of his body.

'In this symbiotic relationship, the tangs eat by cleaning algae from the turtle.

'To some, the turtle doesn't look very pleased - it could be because turtles have hard mouths and cannot smile or he has only chosen to be here because it feels good.

'He obviously doesn't understand the importance of algae being removed so he is there for the massage.

'This particular shot is somewhat unique because the tangs usually congregate more around the shell rather than the head.'

Mr Roberts, from Maui, in Hawaii, has been diving since he was a boy and has developed an obsession with the sea over the years.

He said: 'I have played with photography most of my life but I have been very serious about it for about 12 years.

'My earliest memories of the world beneath the ocean surface, were of following my dad while he was spearfishing off the coast of Keawekapu on Maui.

'Now, over a half of a century later, I am scuba diving and my passion for the sea has become obsession.

'Much of my underwater photography is captured within a couple of miles of the same area I snorkeled with my father.

'The undersea world is still full of splendour and there are still new things to see on every dive.'- www.dailymail.co.uk

Burj Khalifa -The world's tallest skyscraper opens in a blaze of glory

Dubai opened the world's tallest skyscraper in a glitzy ceremony this evening that was meant to put a brave face on crushing debt woes.

The £1billion tower reaches 2,717 ft, 200 storeys into the sky, exceeding the next highest structure by some 1,000 ft.

Dubai's ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum renamed the tower Burj Khalifa after the president of the United Arab Emirates and the ruler of the neighbouring emirate of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahayan.

Abu Dhabi has facilitated $25 billion in bailout funds for Dubai in the past year, fuelling expectations that Dubai will make concessions or cede some of its commercial power to its wealthier neighbour.

Concerns about Dubai's $100-billion debt pile, which has made Dubai's stock exchange one of the world's worst performing, overshadowed both the ceremony and boasts by the builder, Emaar Propertie, that the Burj heralds a new dawn.

'The worry for Dubai is that the event will be remembered as a second bout of hubris,' said David Butter, regional director for Middle East and North Africa at Economist Intelligence Unit.

The first bout was in November, 2008, two months after the collapse of Lehman Bros, when Dubai spent $24 million on the opening ceremony of the Atlantis Hotel, an event that did more to highlight a taste for extravagance than assuage fears that the economic crisis was not being taken seriously.

Emaar says property prices have now stabilised, confounding wider expectations for stress in the sector.

'You have to ask, "why we are building all this?" To bring quality of life and a smile to people and I think we should continue to do that,' said Mohamed Alabbar, chairman of Emaar, the Arab world's largest listed developer.

'Crises come and go,' Alabbar said. 'We build for years to come ... We must have hope and optimism.'

The complex of apartments, offices, shops, restaurants, a mosque, gym, nightclub and Giorgio Armani-designed hotel, was designed to the brief that residents need never leave.

Everything they could possibly need is supposedly provided.

The hotel takes up the first eight floors with suites on the 38th and 39th. Residential apartments go up to the 108th floor – at about 1,300 feet.

A number of the higher floors – up to the 160th – have been designated as office space, while there is a restaurant on the 122nd floor and a gym, with an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, on the 123rd floor – some 1,440 feet off the ground.

On the 124th floor is the world's highest observation deck. The Burj Dubai is also intending to host the world's highest nightclub – on the 143rd floor.

Over the last three decades Dubai has witnessed a massive surge in cash. Developers backed by new money invested heavily - turning the once struggling desert city into a sprawling metropolis of lights and plush buildings.

The city is now dealing with a real estate crash as the borrowed money needed to make the Dubai dream come true continues dries up.

While development still surged forward at the Burj Khalifa, it was made possible only by gigantic billion dollar bailouts from rich United Arab Emirates cousin Abu Dhabi.

And on the day of its official completion, interested parties face further problems. All of the apartments are said to have been sold but its still a mystery who will eventually move in. There is also said to be little interest in new Dubai office space. Developers still say that their vision will come true.

But as the city celebrates, the building is mainly vacant and could leave officials red-faced on Monday.

Even though many of the building's 200 stories are unfinished, organisers are celebrating the launch with an arsenal of fireworks.

A company employee, who asked to remain anonymous, said: 'The inauguration ceremony is to tell the world that we have finished it.

'What has been done is meeting the individual customer's needs. We have met the contracted agreement. Since it started it has continued at one floor being built every week.

'The dates are not confirmed yet but at present we will hand over the residence suites on March 22, the Armani Residences on January 17 and the corporate suites on March 1.'

Investors took little heart from today's opening with Emaar shares closing down 3.4 pe rcent, pulling Dubai's broader index 2.6 per cent lower.

'This is the culmination of Dubai's momentum and not just Emaar's,' said Saud Masud, UBS head of research.

'It is probably the end of Dubai mega projects for the next several years as the emirate tries to rationalise its resources and looks to build the economy again in some way or another.'

In a sign Dubai is trying to meet its obligations, DP World, a subsidiary of state-owned holding company Dubai World, said it had paid obligations tied to a sukuk and a bond issue on time

Dubai sent shockwaves through global markets on November 25 when it said it would request a standstill on billions of dollars of debts linked to state-held holding firm Dubai World and its property units Limitless and Nakheel, developer of three palm-shaped islands.

The Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists worldwide has successfully supported artists who, due to a disability or illness, create their works using not their hands, but their mouths or feet.

A small fraternity of 18 mouth and foot painters has developed into an Association that is active worldwide and is currently represented in 74 countries of the world with 726 artists.

The first international exhibit of the World Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists (VDMFK for its German name) will run until October 23 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Top 10 Tough Laws in the World

Ignorance is no defense – especially when it comes to ignorance of the laws in countries you plan to visit. While it may seem natural to study some of the general customs and laws in major foreign countries you might not expect, for example, to have to look for strange law changes in somewhere like Florida. Most places in the world are relatively easy to get along in. Some strange laws are nothing more than folklore. Every once in a while, though, you’re going to run into something a bit off the wall and it’s important for you to be prepared in advance.

10. DON’T FEED THE PIGEONS (ITALY)

In Italy it is illegal to feed the pigeons. Ok, that’s a bit of a blanket statement. The rule actually has the potential to change from city to city. Make sure you leave the pigeons alone while you’re in Venice, though – the locals are tired of cleaning up pigeon poop. You’ll also want to avoid jumping into fountains, walking around without your shirt on (would you DO that as a tourist), and sitting on the sidewalk to eat your lunch. Fines range from a warning to monetary infractions anywhere from $50 to $600.

9. EATING IN PUBLIC (UNITED ARAB EMIRATES)

Before you leave for the United Arab Emirates you’ll want to make sure you aren’t visiting during Ramadan. During that time you are not allowed to eat or drink in public during fasting hours (ie. daylight hours) at all. Think we’re kidding? Tourists have been fined up to $275 for drinking juice in public. Avoid public displays of affection as well unless you want to spend a few months in jail.

8. DON’T PAY IN CHANGE (CANADA)

Ever have the urge to empty your piggy bank of quarters and run down to the corner store? Don’t do it in Canada. The Currency Act of 1985 prohibits consumers from using unreasonable amounts of coins to pay for purchases. This means you can’t pay for an item in all coins (especially if it’s over $10). Even the use of dollar-coins is limited. The shop owner has the right to choose whether or not he wants to take your coins but doesn’t have to.

7. WASH YOUR CAR (MOSCOW)

In the beautiful city of Moscow it is illegal to drive a dirty car. The definition of dirty, however, is up in the air. Is a dirty car one on which you can draw pictures in the dust? Does it hide the license plate? Does it make the driver invisible? We suppose you’ll find out if the police poll you over but the fines tend to be whatever the police decide to charge you – unless, of course, you offer him a bit of cash.

6. LEAVE YOUR HEADLIGHTS ON (DENMARK)

Studies in Denmark have shown that vehicles with their headlights on are more noticeable by other drivers than those who have their headlights off. You’d think this law would apply to night driving but it doesn’t. Drivers here are required to leave their headlights on during the day as well or may face a fine of up to $100.

5. DON’T STOP ON THE AUTOBAHN (GERMANY)

You’ve heard of the Autobahn, right? The notorious German road where there are no speed limits? Make sure you fill your gas tank BEFORE you get on this daunting road. It’s illegal to pull over on the side of this road for any reason and, if you do, it’s illegal to get out and walk. You are, after all, endangering the lives of the people who are still driving at warp speeds.

4. PUT YOUR SHIRT ON (THAILAND)

In Thailand it is illegal to drive a car or motorcycle without a shirt on – regardless of how hot it is that day. Punishments range from verbal warnings to tickets costing about $10. This is no joke – the local police will pull you over.

3. DON’T KISS YOUR LOVER GOODBYE (FRANCE AND ENGLAND)

Love died a little bit on April 5th of 1910. Lovers spend so much time kissing each other goodbye at train stations that trains were actually running late. The law is relatively old, though, and really isn’t enforced today – in France, that is. In Warrington Bank Quay in England, however, you’ll be asked to move your goodbyes to the “kissing zone.”

2. WEAR A COVER UP (GRENADA)

The folks at Grenada really do have a point. Cruisers visiting the beaches for day excursions have taken to strolling city streets in nothing but their bathing suits. In order to reign in a sense of decency, the city has instituted a fine for those who aren’t wearing decent clothing off of the beaches. Fines can reach up to $270 but the local tourist boards would like you to believe that the law is not enforced. Perhaps its best to simply cover up rather than trying to find out for yourself.

1. NO GUM CHEWING (SINGAPORE)

Those with gum chewing habits may want to call it quits before heading to Singapore. The government really wants to keep the city clean and will fine you for chewing gum, feeding the birds (it causes poop) and forgetting to flush a public toilet. The only legal gum you can chew is Nicorette but you have to get it from a doctor and they will give your name to government officials to confirm you’re allowed to have a wad in your mouth.
